Piedmont Opera’s Production of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music

There is a great pleasure to working with fellow artist who not only value your creativity but also give you complete creative license. It’s a rare thing and one I hold dear to. I look forward to shooting every production that The Piedmont Opera puts on and I walk the creative line every time. It’s always a thrill to be surrounded but such a stunning art form and t0 be able to interpret it visually in my own way.

Winston-Salem may be a smaller town but there is nothing small about their productions. The costumes, the talent, and the commitment are all huge. Please, support this group who works so hard and gives so much. Their art is a joy.

A “Night” to remember …

Piedmont Opera presents a new production of Stephen Sondheim ‘s Tony Award-winning

A Little Night Music

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Everybody’s either doing ‘it’ or desperately looking to, though seldom with their respective spouses, in Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical A Little Night Music, a turn-of-the-last century tale. The result is a riotous hodgepodge of high jinx set to a glorious score written almost entirely in a waltz tempo.

Desiree Armfeldt (Diane Alexander) is a road-weary, middle-aged actress who’s counted among her many lovers Fredrik Egerman (Scott MacLeod), a middle-aged man now married to an 18-year old virgin, Anne (Jennifer DeLatte). His son Henrik (Jesse Darden), an aspiring priest, is secretly in love with Anne. Meanwhile, Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm (Michael Redding) is sleeping with Desiree, much to the chagrin of his wife Countess Charlotte Malcolm (Janine Hawley). They all spend “A Weekend in the Country” at the home of Desiree’s mother Madame Armfeldt (Robin Voiers) where a happy ending doesn’t seem likely.

“Sondheim created a stunning tour de force when he took Ingmar Bergman’s comedy of manners,Smiles of a Summer Night, and turned it into a musical of masterful execution and elegance. Winner of four TONY Awards, this musical work has forever entranced the world of theatre.

Set in 1900 Sweden, A Little Night Music explores the tangled web of affairs centered around actress Desirée Armfeldt and the men who love her: a lawyer by the name of Fredrik Egerman and the Count Carl-Magnus Malcom. When the traveling actress performs in Fredrik’s town, the estranged lovers’ passion rekindles. This strikes a flurry of jealousy and suspicion between Desirée, Fredrik, Fredrick’s wife, Anne, Desirée’s current lover, the Count, and the Count’s wife, Charlotte. Both men — as well as their jealous wives — agree to join Desirée and her family for a weekend in the country at Desirée’s mother’s estate. With everyone in one place, infinite possibilities of new romances and second chances bring endless surprises.

A Little Night Music is full of hilariously witty and heartbreaking moments of adoration, regret and desire. This dramatic musical celebration of love contains Sondheim’s popular song, the haunting “Send in the Clowns.”
